Structure formation with axion dark matter

IFPU
November 25 – 29, 2019

Ten years ago Sikivie and collaborators claimed that Cold Dark Matter (CDM) axions thermalize and form a Bose-Einstein condensate with long-range correlations. This would have a dramatic impact on structure formation and galactic evolution, which could help distinguish the axion from other CDM candidates. The claim, however, has been examined by other authors in recent years, who concluded that while a Bose-Einstein condensate is formed, there are no long-range correlations, which changes the impact on structure formation. The physics of Bose-Einstein condensation in virialized dark matter halos is involved, some progress has been made recently, but there is still room for improvement. The aim of this program is to discuss the state of the art of the topic, and brainstorm about promising future directions.
